Why host your FrontPage web site on an imitation?
It always amazes me when I hear that someone went to the trouble
to create a really nice looking site using FrontPage and then went and hosted
it on something other than a Windows computer. Then, on top of it all,
they wonder why something doesn't work.
While, it looks so obvious when we phrase it as "hosting on an
imitation," lets look at the reasons people might end up hosting their
FrontPage web site on something other than a Windows computer.
All Web Servers are the same.
I call this the ignorance arguement. This shouldn't be
confused with being stupid. All I am saying here is that the person
making the decision just doesn't know there is a difference between web
servers. As long as the web server supports FrontPage, they think, "it is
as good as any other."
On the surface, this would seem to be true. And if all you
are using from FrontPage is the ability to create a web site in a wysiwyg (what
you see is what you get) tool, this is basically true. But, if you want
to take advantage of some of the more powerful features of FrontPage, like
sending a form to an email address, or accessing a database, it isn't at all
true. These additional features were made to primarily work with features
found on the Windows operating system. While FrontPage extensions have
been created that work on other operating systems, this was more of an
afterthought. In addition, you probably wrote the web site on your local
computer, and hopefully tested it there too. It doesn't make sense to run
it on another type of computer unless you plan to test it on that type of
computer.
Windows isn't a secure operating system.
The older Windows operating sytems were, in fact, less secure and
more prone to web attacks. But, recent data comparing Windows 2000 and
above to Linux servers tend to indicate that Windows
may be more secure. At the very least it is hard to argue that
hosting FrontPage on Windows is less secure.
